Open-Toe Options and Podiatric Problems

Open-toed footwear is the natural choice for enjoying summer in style. However, that doesn’t mean that your favorite shoes are free from drawbacks; far from it, actually. The wrong choice might lead to chronic pain, fungal infection, or worse!

PodiatryCare, PC, and the Heel Pain Center is here to tell you that some options really are better than others. Yet, with so many styles available, how do you pick a pair that keeps your feet happy and healthy simultaneously? With a little expert assistance from our talented team, of course!

YES, PLEASE: Cushioned Sandals

  • These provide arch support and ample padding, ideal for everyday wear or light walks. Look for a well-defined arch contour and a midsole that absorbs shock with each step.

NOT SO MUCH: Flat Sandals

  • Flat sandals with minimal padding offer little foot support and can lead to plantar fasciitis, a condition causing heel pain.

WEAR THEM: Wider Wedges

  • These combine style with some stability, thanks to the elevated heel. Select wedges with a wider base for better balance, and choose a heel height you find comfortable for walking.

SIDESTEP IF POSSIBLE: The Teetering Wedge

  • A narrow wedge with an excessively high heel can lead to ankle sprains and instability, especially on uneven terrain.

TRY A PAIR! Thong Sandals

  • A classic choice, choose thongs with a supportive toe post and a slightly contoured footbed. This design helps prevent toe splaying, a condition where the toes drift outwards.

THANKS, BUT NO THANKS: The Flip-Flop Faux Pas

  • Slim, flimsy flip-flops offer minimal arch support and can require toe gripping to maintain stability, potentially leading to pain and muscle fatigue.

When choosing any open-toe shoe, prioritize a snug fit around the heel and midfoot area to prevent excessive sandal movement! You could also select other features that promote foot health, such as including adjustable straps for a custom fit or breathable materials to fend off fungus.
