Diabetic Foot Care

When it comes to diabetes and your health, we know that taking care of your feet might be the last thing on your list to do. But with diabetes usually comes neuropathy, which makes it easier for cuts, infections, and other conditions to take over. Even a small cut can turn into a much larger issue if you don’t pay close attention. How can you take better care of your feet? Keep in mind our 3 tips and tricks for treating your feet when you have diabetes!

One: Wash Your Feet

Use lukewarm water and gentle soap to wash your feet every day, making sure to get in between your toes. You can do this during a shower, or you can take a foot shower or bath at the end of the day. Feel free to check your feet for any unusual signs of concern while you're at it. Dry thoroughly afterward and follow up with mild lotion, if you find it necessary. Avoid applying lotion in between your toes, though, as this can create an infection.

Two: Move Your Body

Those with diabetes aren’t strangers to occasional leg pain. This pain may just cause you to throw in the towel and quit exercising altogether. But keeping yourself in good shape by exercising a few times a week can do great things for your health and your feet. If you prefer a more gentle workout, try bike riding or walking – anything that gets your blood pumping will do. Working out is great for poor circulation. Just be sure to wear comfy, well-fitting sneakers.

Three: Visit Your Podiatrist Daily

The best thing you can do for your feet? Get them checked daily at your podiatrist's office. Since there are so many possible complications with diabetes and your feet, it’s best to get treated by your foot doctor.
