Spring Sports and Ankle Sprains
We love spring sports, but we certainly don’t love to see injuries. Did you know that ankle sprains are common concerns for parents as their little ones or teens take the field, track, or court? For younger patients, it is even more important to address and treat injuries properly. Leaving injuries untreated can cause problems later in life.
The team at PodiatryCare, PC and the Heel Pain Center is celebrating with you and your family as the spring sports season brings a new adventure. We’re also here to equip you with the tools you need to prevent or address an ankle sprain. When someone twists, rolls, or turns their ankle awkwardly, they’re at risk of a sprain. Here are a few things to consider:
The shoe matches the sport
Wearing the wrong type of shoe puts your child at risk of an injury. If they’re playing tennis, purchase shoes specifically for tennis. If your child is running track, they need shoes for this event. We understand the costs of buying a separate pair of shoes for each sport. However, reducing the risk of an injury is priceless.
The surfaces are safe
If your child is practicing on an uneven track or a poorly maintained field, there is an increased risk of injury. Talk to your child’s coach about your concerns and see if there are ways to practice at another location. If your child is at risk of a sprained ankle, so are the other kids on the team.
The team knows the drill
If someone thinks they have an ankle sprain, do you know what to do? Make sure that the whole team knows how to respond, too. Focus on R.I.C.E. and spread the word to your team.
Rest your ankle
Apply ice
Compress the injury
Elevate your ankle
We’re excited about an injury-free sports season! We hope these tips can help you and your family spend more time playing and less time recovering from an injury. Regardless, we’re your neighborhood podiatrists, and we’re here to help. Never attempt to diagnose an injury at home. We’re here to manage the diagnosis and treatment for you.
