Putting Your Foot Health First
If you’re not including your foot health in your health care, you’re missing a big part. April is National Foot Health Awareness Month, and we hope to remind you to put your feet first. Are we asking you to prioritize your foot health over your heart or dental health? No. We just want you to see how they are all part of your overall health.
The doctors at PodiatryCare, PC and the Heel Pain Center are here to remind you of three ways to make foot care easier and a part of your routine. Looking down at our feet also gives us a snapshot of our overall health. We can identify many conditions through changes in our feet. Diabetes and heart disease are examples. Are you ready to make changes to your routine?
Talk about your feet during your check-up
As podiatrists, we’re here to help with your foot and ankle pain. When you go to the doctor for your check-up, mention your feet, too. Start thinking about health care differently. Bring up changes on your feet during your annual physical and visit with your podiatrist.
Foot history is health history
We can name family members who have had diabetes or heart disease. Can you list family members with bunions or painful flat feet? We inherit our foot structure from family members. We have an increased likelihood of developing conditions based on heredity. Knowing the risks helps you plan better for care.
Look at your feet every day
Do you wash your feet in the shower? Are you looking at them every day? We can get caught up in the busyness and forget about our feet. We’re putting them to work every day, so they need some attention, too. Wash and dry your feet thoroughly, and spend time taking a closer look during an inspection. Do you have any corns or calluses? Scrapes or bruises? Talk with your doctor about any recent changes.
Act fast if you see any changes
Don’t share foot hygiene items
Keep up with podiatry appointments
If you’re ready to put your foot health first, talk about your feet more, focus on your family history, and add daily inspections to your routine.
