Plan For a Walk This Fall
If you’re not walking this fall season, you’re missing out. Why? There are so many health benefits associated with taking steps at a slower pace. Remember, running isn’t the only way to include exercise in your day. From head to toe, a brisk walk can bring you better health.
The doctors at PodiatryCare, PC and the Heel Pain Center love to see the benefits of walking and how it impacts a patient’s foot and ankle health. If you are ready to start a new workout routine that is low impact but highly beneficial, we’re here to help. Follow along for three ways to enjoy the benefits of walking while still protecting your feet and ankles.
Pick a podiatrist
If you’re in our neighborhood, we hope you’ll choose us. Starting with a recent checkup of your feet and ankles is one of the best ways to begin a new exercise routine. If you have unaddressed foot problems, walking will only make things worse. Don’t fall for the myth that walking isn’t a big deal.
Pay attention to your shoes
Do you currently have custom orthotics? If you do, consider asking your podiatrist about creating a pair for your walking shoes. While shopping, make a selection that has plenty of arch support and flexibility. Now is a great time to have your feet measured again, too. Before you say “yes” to the shoes, make sure you have walked around the store wearing both shoes.
Pair up
Motivation is a must-have for exercise. Pair up with a friend to have a walking buddy. Find a trail that you both enjoy and hold each other accountable. It helps to have someone encourage you when you aren’t ready to put on your walking shoes. Another great way for accountability is to join a walking club in your neighborhood or at your local gym.
If you’re wondering why we talk so much about walking, remember the benefits:
Helps to maintain a healthy weight
Reduces stress and tension
Strengthens bones and muscles
Reduces the risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.
Improves balance and coordination
