Fibromyalgia and Foot Pain: Understanding the Connection
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition whose main symptom is widespread pain in the body. While pain sites vary from person to person, those with foot pain can find everyday activities like walking or standing especially challenging.
While there is no cure for fibromyalgia, we at Podiatry Care, PC, and the Heel Pain Center are here to help you understand and manage the foot pain it causes.
Why Does Fibromyalgia Cause Foot Pain?
While the exact cause of fibromyalgia-related foot pain remains unclear, two main theories exist:
One suggests the central nervous system, often hyperactive in fibromyalgia, misinterprets normal signals from the feet as pain. This heightened sensitivity can exaggerate even slight discomfort into significant hurt.
Another theory points towards widespread inflammation that affects the foot’s plantar fascia. This inflammation can contribute to plantar fasciitis.
Types of Foot Pain in Fibromyalgia
While some people may experience burning or stinging sensations in the soles or tops of their feet, others may describe a deep aching or a “pins and needles” sensation. Some individuals also report increased sensitivity to touch or pressure on their feet.
Managing Foot Pain with Fibromyalgia:
Medication: Interestingly, the medications commonly used for fibromyalgia are low-dose antidepressants and muscle relaxants, which help alleviate foot pain. Consult with your podiatrist for the right medicine.
Physical Therapy: Physical therapists can develop personalized exercise programs to improve flexibility, strengthen muscles, and stabilize balance. This can help reduce pain and promote better foot function.
Orthotics: Custom orthotics provide additional support and cushioning for the feet, which can minimize stress on the plantar fascia.
Lifestyle Modifications: Maintaining a healthy weight, wearing comfortable shoes, getting enough sleep, and managing stress can all contribute to improved pain management in fibromyalgia.
