Get Rid of Big Toe Pain

We often don’t realize how crucial our big toe is for doing everyday things like standing and walking until we experience a sudden pain in our big toe. Many causes for this pain, including bunion complications and overuse, can make it tricky to self-diagnose. The best way to identify your condition is to call your podiatrist for help.

Common Causes for Big Toe Pain:

Pain and discomfort in your big toe are often caused by disease, injury, or structural abnormality.

  1. Gout

This producer of big toe pain is caused by a poor diet that increases uric acid circulating in the bloodstream. When the acid reaches a high enough level, it can crystallize in the joints, with the large joint of the big toe frequently being a target. Gout in the big toe can be so bad that brushing a bed sheet over your toe can cause unbearable pain.

  2. Turf Toe

This sprain injury often happens to the big toe from jamming and pushing off with your feet and toes. It happens more often on artificial turf fields (hence the name), but a big toe sprain can occur on any surface.

  3. Hallux Rigidus

Hallux means big toe, and rigidus refers to the near-total rigidity of the big toe joint in this degenerative arthritic condition. Various factors, including bunions and other types of arthritis, can contribute to the formation of hallux rigidus.
