Sprains, Pains, and Injury Heals

As podiatrists, we know the benefits of athletics, and we’ve always advocated getting responsibly involved. Yet, we’re also well aware that staying active comes with an occasional cost, often paid by the feet!

Injuries to the foot and ankle are common in almost every sport, but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the activity of your choice. The PodiatryCare, PC, and the Heel Pain Center want you to reap the benefits of exercise minus the pain that sometimes accompanies it. We’ve provided an assortment of strategies and handy info for you below.

Ankle Sprains: The Usual Suspects

Sprains might sound like no big deal, but besides being one of the most common injuries we treat, they’re frequently left alone for far too long.

  • Without treatment, sprains spiral into other complications, such as chronic pain, ankle instability, and increased likelihood of injury and arthritis later in life.

  • Diagnostic tools like in-house digital X-rays and ultrasound machines allow us to determine the extent of the damage. We check for torn ligaments or dislocation promptly.

  • Early evaluation and swift, professional treatment keep joints healthy and speed healing.

Heel Problems: Overused and Abused

Heel pain can be more complicated and enduring than people think. Trauma, over-exertion, poorly chosen shoes, and bad foot alignment exacerbate heel problems.

  • Proper foot support via orthotics will help with faulty foot alignment.

  • Cortisone injections can provide relief.

  • Shockwave therapy is a modern, conservative treatment that quickly reduces inflammation.

Diabetic Wound Care: Don’t Delay, Act Right Away

For diabetics, safety comes first when it comes to exercise. Persistent wounds, neuropathy, and worse are awaiting if diabetic foot care matters aren’t addressed immediately.

  • Untreated wounds can lead to foot ulcers and even put you at risk for amputation.

  • Expert DPMs like Rebecca Wiesner and Charlotte George specialize in diabetic wound care. In the event of an injury, they’ll examine your neurologic and vascular health and immediately take the necessary steps.
