Plan Now: Senior Foot Conditions

Have you ever wondered what it means to age in a healthy way? Well, this is your month! September is Healthy Aging Month. We believe this is a great time to remind our family and friends that we can remain healthy as we age. It’s time to prepare now for the body and mind changes that will come in the future. It is simply a part of life.

The doctors at PodiatryCare, PC and the Heel Pain Center treat patients of all ages, including senior citizens. They understand the common questions and concerns that can apply directly to patients and their families. They are aware of conditions like diabetes or even heart disease. Each of these conditions can impact health from head to toe.

If you are a senior or care for a senior loved one, watch for these conditions:

Fractures

As we get older, we must make sure we stay on top of our vitamin D and calcium. Osteoporosis is a concern. It weakens our bones and leaves us at greater risk of falling. People over 65 are at increased risk of falling and experiencing an injury, too. Don’t forget — September is also Falls Prevention Awareness Month.

Take note: Watch for signs of balance issues.

Ingrown toenails

What can happen to our toenails as we age? They can become thicker and more brittle. Unfortunately, ingrown toenails have become a concern, too. This condition occurs when the toenail grows into the skin's side. Improper toenail trimming can also be the cause. Never tear or rip nails.

Take note: Watch for thick, hardened toenails before trimming.

Dry, cracked skin

We talk about washing your feet, drying them, and moisturizing them. As we age, this third step becomes even more important. Dry, cracked feet become a problem, and the condition can be painful. Cracked heels can itch and even bleed. Be proactive by keeping moisturizing a part of the routine.

Take note: Watch for signs of infection (swelling, pain, etc.)

We all know and love a senior. Let’s do our part to help them stay safe. As we prepare for the golden years, take notes now to strengthen your foot care routine.
