Try This When Trimming Toenails

If you think you are trimming your toenails the right way, you may have a few more tips to add to your routine. Taking care of your toenails is an important way to keep your feet healthy and clean. It is also a step that many people may rush or assume they are doing the right way. From the frequency of trimming to the right pair of clippers, we want to make sure you have the best information.

The doctors at PodiatryCare, PC and the Heel Pain Center warn against a common condition that results in poor trimming: ingrown toenails. This condition occurs when the toenail begins to grow into the side of your skin. The gradual growth can be very painful. If left untreated, it can lead to infection.

Before you cut your toenails again, remember our three recommendations:

Choose the best clippers

If you are using fingernail clippers for your toenails, it’s time to make a change. This type of clipper is too small. Toenail clippers are larger and can tackle thicker, broader nails. Be sure to choose clippers that are clean and sharp. As with other hygiene tools, do not share them with others.

Choose the best time

Experts suggest clipping your toenails every six to eight weeks. If you have questions, check in with your podiatrist. Trimming your nails too often or too short can lead to ingrown toenails. However, waiting too long can be a problem, too. Long nails can get caught on your socks or rub against the inside of your shoes.

Choose the best environment

Cleanliness is so important for your hygiene. Before trimming your toenails, wash your hands thoroughly. Again, double-check the health of your clippers and make sure your surrounding surfaces are clean, too. Then, think about what’s next: your shoes. Whether they are socks or house slippers, make sure they are clean.

Getting this part right is so important. We want to help you prevent inconvenient ingrown toenails. We also want your feet to stay clean and healthy. If you have questions, we’re here to help.
