September is Falls Prevention Month

Did you know that September is Falls Prevention Month? For older Americans, the risk of a fall increases after their 65th birthday. According to the US CDC, 25% of Americans over 65 will fall each year. If you’re in this age range or care for an older loved one or friend, do you know the risk? The doctors at the PodiatryCare, PC and the Heel Pain Center are here to help you spot the signs early — and prevent a fall from happening in your home.

Here are some questions to ask. Get more facts here

Have you fallen within the last year?

Unfortunately, the risk of falling increases if it has happened once before. Some senior citizens may be embarrassed to share about a past fall. Knowing this information is especially helpful for doctors and caregivers. The goal is to put help in place to prevent a future fall, which can lead to life-changing injuries and death.

Have you been advised to use a cane?

If a doctor has recommended a cane for walking, listen up. The doctor’s advice can be lifesaving. If you are using a cane or have received advice about this assistance, pay attention. Reduce the risk of an injury by using doctor-approved resources.

Do you feel unsteady while walking or rely on nearby objects for support?

Balance is key. For some older Americans, age has impacted their balance. Poor balance and weak muscles can also cause worry, leading to a lack of confidence while walking.
