Senior feet and nutrition
With each year that passes, our feet change, and so do our needs. At PodiatryCare, PC and the Heel Pain Center, doctors work with senior patients who are experiencing some of these changes. We encourage older patients to keep moving and strengthen their bones. It can often be hard with conditions such as arthritis or other forms of foot and ankle pain. Without support, eating a balanced diet with calcium can be a challenge, too.
Here are three ways to encourage your loved one.
Exercise with them
You may not have to attend their exercise class but perhaps tag along on their visit to the gym. It is great for accountability and companionship. Remind your loved ones that while their movement may look a bit different these days, there’s no reason for them to stop living an active lifestyle. Patients with arthritis are strongly encouraged to keep moving.
Shop with them
We’re talking groceries, of course. If a senior is still able to drive, great! Tag along and help them select healthy food choices; this is especially important for people with diabetes. Don’t forget the calcium-rich foods, too. These foods are great for promoting healthy bones. Seniors are at risk of falls, which can often lead to serious injuries.
Go with them
Here, we’re talking about a trip to the podiatrist. If you notice that a senior is having a hard time walking or has fallen recently, offer to take them to the doctor. Perhaps go out for a healthy meal after the appointment to discuss any questions or concerns.
