4 Ways Seniors Can Protect Their Feet in January and February
As we age, our feet become more susceptible to various ailments, and the chilly winter months can bring unique challenges. Here are 4 ways for seniors to keep their feet safe against the elements courtesy of us at PodiatryCare, PC, and the Heel Pain Center.
1. Keep Your Feet Warm and Stable
Proper winter footwear can be tricky for seniors. Essentially, you’ll want to invest in thick, supportive shoes with good traction but also that aren’t too tight and choke circulation in the feet.
And if you don’t typically wear orthotics, you may want to wear them until it gets warmer. Orthotics can make you less prone to falling and add an extra layer of warmth.
2. Manage Existing Conditions
As we’ve said in the past, the winter worsens existing conditions. For diabetes, this means an increased risk of foot infections due to a lack of sensation in the feet. Poor circulation can also amplify your peripheral neuropathy, whereas arthritis can worsen stiffness and inflammation.
A tip: Vitamin D is known to help manage osteoporosis, so if you want to strengthen your bones and prevent falls, ask your doctor if this supplement is right for you.
3. Prevent Slips and Falls
Ice is one of the leading causes of fall injuries. Keep your walkways and entryways clear of snow, and sprinkle salt or sand to improve traction.
You can also use assistive devices like a cane or walker for added stability. And since you’ll be indoors more often, check that there aren’t any tripping hazards like uneven rugs or clutter.
4. Stay Active
The wintertime may prevent you from taking advantage of your senior discount at the local gym.
But the cold weather shouldn’t be an excuse not to work out. Even gentle exercises like treadmill walking or chair yoga can improve circulation, maintain flexibility, and keep your body in shape.
