Senior Foot Care: What You Should Know

As we age, it’s normal to run into problems with our health. But that doesn’t mean we must live with foot pain or discomfort forever. Foot pain is not natural or normal at any age. If you’re a senior experiencing any signs or symptoms of a foot condition, we encourage you to contact a podiatrist for help. In the meantime, learning more about your suspected condition and how to prevent new ones can give you more years of active, healthy feet. Below are some of the most common foot issues you can face as you age and some tips for avoiding them!

Common Conditions for Seniors

Senior foot care is essential to maintaining overall health as we age. You should check frequently for any pain or change in the appearance of your feet or toes. Catching a condition or injury before it can develop into a more serious issue will help save you from permanent damage.

Some of the more common problems our feet suffer from as we age include:

●      Nerve problems

●      Diabetes

●      Bunions

●      Poor circulation

●      Arthritis

How You Can Help Your Feet

Due to poor eyesight and mobility, it can be challenging to care for your feet as you age. Having someone regularly check your feet for problems is a good idea. Here are some other helpful tips seniors can follow to ensure the best foot care:

●      Maintain good circulation. One way to do this is to make sure you walk frequently. Also, try to avoid sitting for extended periods with crossed legs. If you do, make sure you rise to stretch and move. Quitting smoking and regular exercise also helps.

●      Keep your feet clean and dry.

●      Make sure to purchase properly fitting, comfortable shoes with plenty of room and will not deform your feet or toes. Make sure your shoes have proper cushioning and support as well.

●      See your podiatrist regularly for checkups and follow-up appointments.
