Beating Bunions
Bunions not only create uncomfortable pain and swelling, but they can drastically interfere with daily life, too. Sometimes the condition can prevent people from participating in exercise and physical activities. The best thing you can do for your feet is call your podiatrist for help. But there are plenty of things you can do from home to help your bunion or prevent them from showing up alongside professional treatment. Here are three ways you can beat your bunion!
Inserts Can Help
Shoe inserts, orthotics, and bunion pads are always a good idea for bunions. Bunion cushions typically fit around your big toe and are easy to wear. Alternatively, you might find padded inserts useful, which can distribute pressure more evenly throughout your foot, alleviating some of the discomfort you might feel. Investing in a pair of custom orthotics is also a great idea.
Get Rid of the Pain
Using over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications as necessary can help reduce pain and inflammation from your bunion. Always make sure you’re resting your feet often. Going to physical therapy or implementing some daily stretches can help with any stiffness you may find. You can even ice your bunion or look into cortisone shots. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the bunion and realign your toe.
Footwear Makes a Big Difference
High heels aren’t designed with our feet’s best interest in mind. One of the easiest ways to get a bunion is by wearing high heels for extended periods. Although you might like the look of stylish shoes, avoid wearing heels and any uncomfortable footwear. Instead, buy shoes with a wide toe box. The perfect fit will conform to your feet comfortably, without any pain or pressure.
