Protect Your Feet This Winter

Freezing temperatures, bitter wind, and slushy snow all mean one thing – winter is in full swing! Most of us have our heavy jackets, gloves, scarves, and hats out and are putting them to good use. But a lot of people forget about keeping their feet warm with thick socks and boots.

Cold temperatures can be especially harsh on your lower extremities, particularly your toes and feet. Chilly air causes your body to slow blood circulation to your feet to preserve your core temperature. This is why it’s crucial to take good care of your feet during the winter.

Winter’s Effects on Your Feet

If you have existing foot conditions, cold weather can make it even more painful. This is especially true for those with poor blood circulation, diabetes, or neuropathy. But even if you aren’t suffering from a foot ailment, you’re at a higher risk of developing one of the following during the winter:

  • Frostbite

  • Dry, cracked heels

  • Toenail fungus

  • Raynaud’s disease

  • Morton’s neuroma and other neuropathy conditions
