Shoe Shopping and Diabetes

Getting the right pair of shoes is one of the simplest and easiest ways of keeping your feet pain-free. This is especially true for those with diabetes. If you have diabetes, you might be familiar with leg pain, numb feet, and nerve damage. Comfy shoes can significantly lower your chances of soreness.

Did you know that only 6 out of 10 people with diabetes wear the correct shoe size? The first step to shoe shopping is getting your shoe size remeasured. Our feet are growing all the time, which means your best chance of getting the best size is to remeasure your feet every time you shop. Once you know your size, it’s time to look for your perfect pair.

Our Top Tips for The Perfect Fit

  • Shoes should feel comfortable when you try them on. If your pair doesn’t feel right in the store, they likely won’t be safe for your feet. “Breaking shoes in” only leads to more pain and discomfort.

  • Go shopping at the end of the day when your feet are swollen

  • If you’re in between sizes, choose the larger size

  • Choose low-heeled shoes to avoid putting more pressure on your feet

  • Open-toed shoes make it easier for debris to fall into your shoe, which can lead to blisters and cuts. Instead, go for laces shoes that provide better support

  • Find a pair you love? Buy multiples. This will prevent your shoes from breaking down faster

  • Bring the socks you’ll wear with your shoes. If you like wearing thick socks with your winter boots, it’s best to be wearing them while trying new pairs on

  • If you wear custom orthotics, keep that in mind when shopping

  • Shoes with a spacious “toe box” are most comfortable and help you avoid squished toes

  • Take a walk around the store with each pair on. Are they comfy when you walk?
