What Are Orthotics?

For those who are dealing with tired, achy feet due to arthritis or diabetes, you might find the perfect solution in a pair of custom orthotics. Orthotics are shoe inserts designed to alleviate foot pain and correct any conditions, like bunions. Unlike padded shoe inserts you can find at your local drugstore; custom orthotics are designed just for you. Here’s everything you need to know about custom orthotics.

What’s the Difference?

There are two specific types of custom orthotics you can get. Depending on which condition you deal with specifically, your podiatrist may recommend functional orthotics or accommodative orthotics.

  • Functional orthotics are typically made of plastic, making them rigid. They’re used to correct abnormal foot motions or positions.

  • Accommodative orthotics are typically made of compression materials, making them soft and cushioned. They provide support to your foot and ankle. These orthotics are best for people who suffer from foot pain due to conditions like diabetes or arthritis.

For those who like to ice skate and ski, you’re in luck! You can get a pair of custom orthotics for your skates and boots.

Getting Your First Pair

What can you expect at your orthotic appointment? If you and your podiatrist decide that custom orthotics are the right option for your feet, your doctor will make a precise mold of your feet. This mold will be turned into either functional orthotics or accommodative orthotics. Once you begin wearing orthotics, you should feel relief pretty quickly. If you experience any pain or discomfort, it’s important to notify your podiatrist. By your one-month check-in, you should notice an improvement in your feet.
