Beware of Holiday Hurt
‘Tis the season for gathering with family and friends. It’s also the season for accidents. If you thought you swept up all the leftover pieces from the broken ornament, think again. What about the slippery pieces of tissue paper that go overlooked? While all these beautiful decorations bring back memories of a special day, they can also cause slips and slides around the house. At PodiatryCare, PC and the Heel Pain Center, we know that falls can happen any time of the year.
As you’re tidying up the house from now until the new year, think about ways to prevent this scenario. We’re here to help.
Broken glass
Whether it’s a holiday teacup or your favorite ornament, accidents happen. If glass falls, you want to be sure to clean it up as soon as possible. Even with the best vacuum or broom, encourage the rest of your family and other guests to wear socks. Even the tiniest pieces of glass can cause a cut. Left undetected, a small cut can become a bigger concern for patients with diabetes.
Clutter all around
The holiday hustle can make us feel busy and even overwhelmed. If you haven’t had time to open boxes or clear space, you could be creating a dangerous setup. If you don’t want to hear, “Ouch!” in your home, try to make some room. Have you considered creating one space to house extra items or things that haven’t been organized? Be sure that you have plenty of space to move around.
Low on lighting
We’re all guilty of staying up a little past our bedtime during the holiday season. This means we may also go hunting for a sweet treat or leftovers from dinner. Poor lighting in the hallways, bathrooms, or kitchen can create a not-so-fun scenario. From a slip to a bump, poorly lit areas can cause injuries.
What’s the good news? All these scenarios have easy fixes. Follow our tips for an accident-free holiday season and remember to prioritize your foot needs. It’s worth it every time. We’re a phone call away, and we’re ready to serve you and your family.
