Tackling Ingrown Toenails

Here in Connecticut, most sandals and toeless shoes have been shelved until spring. Instead, we are back in our closed shoes. That could be a problem!

An ingrown toenail can develop when footwear is tight and/or narrow in the toe area. Tight shoes press against the toenails, forcing them down into the skin and tissue that surround the nails. This can cause discomfort, especially when wearing shoes, and you may notice that the skin is red and warm. If the ingrown nail is not professionally treated, the area may get infected and show a discharge.

Wearing tight shoes is not the only cause of an ingrown nail. If the toenails are trimmed in a curved fashion instead of straight across the top, the corners of the nails can cut into the tender skin surrounding them.

No matter what causes an ingrown nail, this problem must be tackled quickly, especially if there are signs of infection.

Treating Ingrown Toenails

Please come see us if you suspect that you have an ingrown toenail. Keep an eye on your children too – kids’ feet grow so fast that their toenails may be hitting the end of a too-small shoe. This scenario can lead to ingrown toenails in children and teens.

Our treatment for ingrown nails is gentle and virtually painless. First, we will numb the toe and then remove the ingrown corner of the nail.

For those who repeatedly have this problem, we can take away the actual root of the ingrown portion of the nail. This procedure is also virtually pain-free and will permanently prevent the regrowth of this part of the toenail.

These in-office procedures ensure that you will be back to your normal activities in no time! Don’t suffer from an ingrown nail – please call us for relief!
