A Podiatrist's Guide to Safe Pedicures

Pedicures: A luxurious treat for tired toes or a potential minefield for foot health? Sometimes, it’s hard to tell which is which until after the fact.

The podiatrists at PodiatryCare, P.C., and the Heel Pain Center see plenty of patients with pedicure-related issues like ingrown toenails and fungal infections. Yet, while there are risks involved in pampering your feet, it doesn't mean you must ditch pedicures altogether! This blog will help you ensure that your next visit leaves your feet feeling pampered and healthy.

Sterilization Matters

  • While a quick wipe-down might seem sanitary, it doesn't guarantee germ-free instruments.

  • Select salons that prioritize sterilization using an autoclave, a high-powered device that obliterates all bacteria and viruses.

  • Unsure about their sterilization methods? Ask! If they don't use an autoclave, consider bringing your own tools (readily available at beauty stores) or find a salon that emphasizes proper hygiene.

Watch Out for Warning Signs

  • Pedicures are meant to be relaxing, yet tuning out completely can leave your feet vulnerable. Try to keep an eye on the tools being used at your salon of choice.

  • Straight toenail trimming is key to prevent ingrown nails, while rounded edges are a red flag.

  • Avoid callus and corn removal at salons – these issues are best handled by a podiatrist.

  • Ensure fresh, disposable liners are used for each client to minimize germ transmission.

When in Doubt, Consult Your Podiatrist

  • For individuals with diabetes, poor circulation, or compromised immune systems (think arthritis), pedicures might not be the safest option.

  • Always consult your podiatrist before indulging, as they can assess your individual risk factors and recommend the best course of action for your podiatric health.

There’s nothing less relaxing than a sudden infection or complication that results from your efforts at self-care! Pedicure responsibly, and when in doubt, check in with a DPM.
