December – a time for celebrations! No matter which holidays you and your family celebrate, you can be sure that it will be a busy time with entertaining, traveling, and shopping.

All these activities can really take a toll on your feet! So it’s important to take some time to treat your feet well for all they will do for you.

Plan Your Foot Care for Comfortable Traveling

If you are venturing far from home, whether in a plane, car, or train, be sure to pay attention to your foot and ankle health

One potential problem that can be hazardous is a deep vein thrombosis or blood clot in the leg. Staying motionless for long periods with your legs down may trigger this painful condition. If you observe swelling in your leg accompanied by persistent pain, get medical attention right away.

Keep your feet comfy with these travel tips:

  • If you are traveling by air, wear slip-on shoes and socks to get you through airport security and for comfort in your seat.

  • Keep your feet and legs moving during the flight. Stretch often, flex your ankles and take a stroll down the aisle whenever possible. The alphabet game is a great way to move your feet in all directions and keep your blood flowing – just form the letter shapes “A” through “Z” with both feet several times during the flight.

  • Spend minimal time with your legs crossed.

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

  • Limit salty foods to minimize water retention.

Gear Up for Shopping Trips

  • Break up long treks through the mall with a coffee break. Elevate your feet and relax as you get your second wind!

  • Wear your most comfortable walking shoes – now is the time for comfort over fashion. A sturdy, well-made shoe that fits well and has lots of cushioning can help prevent foot, leg and back pain.

  • When the weather is cold, wet or slippery, choose warm boots and shoes with lots of tread to protect your feet and reduce the chance of falling.

  • Be smart when party going – stick to comfortable shoes for traveling and then switch to your fashionable high heels at the event.

Whether shopping or socializing, take good care of your feet after you get home. Soak in warm water and then dry carefully. Smooth on a rich, soothing foot cream or lotion to keep your skin supple.
